Feeding Info
Main DietThere are many quality dog foods on the market, but at Sandridge, the Papillons are fed Solid Gold as their main diet. When puppies leave, they are eating about 1/3 cup of puppy food per day, divided into 3 feedings. Seameal, which is a vitamin mineral supplement, is added to the morning and evening meals. TreatsMany things can be used as rewards or treats. Solid Gold’s Tiny Tots and Solid Gold Jerky is given often, but Sandridge paps also receive raw carrots, tomatoes, apples, bananas and other fruits and vegetables. You can’t peel a hard boiled egg in the house without the paps running up to you to beg for some. Foods to AvoidDogs will eat almost all people food, but some of our favorites can be poisonous or lethal for to our pets. Chocolate contains methylxanthines (caffeine and theobromine), which are not toxic to us but can be lethal to pets. A 20 to 40 pound dog can die from ingesting 1 pound of chocolate. For a 5 pound Papillon, a deadly dose could be just 2.5 ounces. Grapes and raisins also can be toxic but it takes a large quantity to do serious damage. Bones and Raw FoodThe best diet for any dog is the Bones and Raw Food (BARF) diet. While it is the best diet, it can require more effort on the part of the dog owner. My paps occasionally received raw chicken necks instead of their dog food. Since I am not a BARF feeder I recommend using any search engine to find more information from the numerous websites with information on the BARF diet. |
